Here’s a Saint Louis classic - Gooey Butter Cake. The origin story - or stories, as it happens - vary wildly, but the general consensus is that it was born in Saint Louis by accident. And today there are countless iterations throughout Saint Louis, and just about every family has a recipe that they cart out for Sunday socials, holiday gatherings, and bake sales. Our favorite features a baked cream cheese custard with hints of vanilla over a shortbread crust, but sometimes we’re of a mind to get a little creative with the flavor profiles, as this is a remarkably versatile bar.
